Michigan Security Network

Michigan Security Network (MiSN) received its second grant from NEI in January 2010. This grant of $300,000 will support continued organizational growth, build the region’s business related to homeland security and build upon NEI’s initial investment of $153,000 made to MiSN in July 2009.

The initial grant was made to provide short-term resources so MiSN could pursue immediate opportunities and advance longer-term strategies related to southeast Michigan’s unique role and asset base in homeland security.

The Michigan Security Network has identified three key areas offering the greatest growth potential for the state: cyber security, border security and biodefense. The organization will focus on helping Michigan businesses of all sizes identify critical technology needs within those sectors and coordinate a virtual business accelerator with existing university R&D centers.

In addition, Michigan Security Network will build a comprehensive homeland security database and leverage its market research, expertise and business networks to bring funding and investment to the state. MiSN’s plan estimates that there is the potential to create over 2,100 jobs and generate roughly $152 million in salaries in cyber security, bio security and border protection in southeast Michigan by 2013 if the region’s assets are properly promoted and advanced. If MiSN is successful in establishing proposed projects and acquiring the federal contracts that are projected as a result of the center, MiSN should be self-sustaining in the next three years.
